Alexander Fitch Merlot

Like my new wine glasses?

This is supposed to be my little secret. But I’m gonna share it with you.

The wine guy at my Trader Joe’s hipped me to this one a few years ago. Priced at around $6, it drinks like a wine costing three times that amount. That’s what he told me, anyway. And I’m a sucker for good marketing.

Still, I’ve been buying and drinking this happily for a few years. Marketing bullshit aside, this one is absolutely worthy.

In that movie “Sideways,” (which I saw four times), the good-looking but dumb actor who was engaged to marry the wrong woman yelled at his wine-snob friend, “And we’re ordering the merlot!” suggesting that there was something lesser than about merlot, which I hadn’t realized until then.

I always liked merlot. Was there some reason I shouldn’t?

Pish. I love what I love. And I love this Alexander Fitch merlot.

Drinkable. Low tannins. Not very complex, but easy on the palate.  Some oak. Mild fruit. And from the very excellent Alexander Valley. Not like I’m an expert, but I’ve never had a bad wine from the Alexander Valley.

You could easily drink a whole bottle of this with dinner, and you’d thank me.

Check it out. My little secret. One of them, anyway…
